Communicating and Dealing With Creditors

Dealing with creditors when you are having financial difficulty is one of those things that nobody enjoys. Having to communicate with them and answer their phone calls can be very depressing.

Nobody likes to deal with harassing phone calls, but how should you deal with creditors so you can get through a difficult time?  If you’ve had to screen your calls and hope that when you see an ‘unknown’ or ‘private’ number that it’s not a creditor calling, you’re not alone. Dealing with creditors in an effective way can be helpful.

The first rule is to face the problem head on. Instead of hiding and dodging phone calls from your creditors who want to know when you’ll be making your payments, talk to them right away.

Honest and Open Communication

Be honest and direct about your situation and ask for help. If you have a good history with them, they will likely be accommodating. Sometimes maybe more helpful than you’re expecting. They are people like yourself and could also be facing difficult times. The creditor may also be more apprehensive than you at making the call.

When you decide on a payment plan, keep your promises. If you make a payment arrangement, don’t ignore it. This will help your standing in the future.

On the other hand, don’t let creditors bully you. Become familiar with consumer rights where you live and hold your creditor to that standard.

You will generally find that the phone calls and nightmares can be eliminated with a little future planning with your creditors. They want to receive the money, if not today, at a negotiated date.

Empower Yourself

Remember, even though it doesn’t feel like it, the creditor needs you as much or more as you needed them. Those who have gone through this experience before, and there are plenty, are always surprised that after appearing to apply “bullying” tactics, how helpful the creditor can be once you admit to the severity of your situation.
